A Hard Itch to Scratch

It itches; it flakes, and it‘s unwelcome. Psoriasis is an auto-immune inflammatory condition that runs in families. It could be running across your mouth as well. Recently made noteable by Kim Kardashian, psoriasis only affects about three percent of the world population. If you’re in that three percent and develop it, especially in your mouth, it can be annoying at best and scary at worst. An equal opportunity disorder, it affects men and women equally and often doesn’t show up until a person is in their 20s or 30s.  While we primarily think of psoriasis as a dry skin condition, it can appear anywhere in the moist oral cavity. To perform a lap exam, your child sits facing you in your lap. You lean your child back toward me so that your youngster is safely lying in both our laps. Maintaining eye contact with you will help keep your toddler calm.

Burning the Midnight Bacteria

The all-night study session, the weekend-long term paper dash, late nights, early mornings and stress – these are all part of being a college student. But all these factors can lead to neglect and abuse of your regular dental health. All that hustle and bustle can mean not only skipping your regular brushing, but also skipping balanced meals in favor of snacking on sugary, carbohydrate-rich ‘convenience’ foods and beverages. A steady diet of pizza and soda, donuts and cappuccino can take a toll on your oral health. When you eat carbs, you never eat alone. Oral bacteria also feed on those insidious sugars and carbohydrates. This bacterial pig-out produces a sticky film called plaque that attaches to your teeth. If plaque isn’t removed every day, it builds up and eventually turns into a cement-like substance called tartar.

Know Your ABC's

Sure, you take good care of your teeth but what about your gums? With so much emphasis on cavities, it can be easy to forget that your gums need care, too. Vitamins* can be either curative or preventive depending upon the situation, either way, vitamins are very important to your gums. Here are a few of the most important vitamins for gum health: Vitamin A is an antioxidant that supports skin and cellular health as well as bone metabolism. Good sources of Vitamin A are liver, sweet potatoes, kale, spinach and pumpkin. Folic Acid is a B vitamin that can destroy the toxins that lead to plaque and gingivitis.
